Suburban Douchebag

So after I went on a run this morning, I was sitting around, drinking coffee, and listening to Morning Edition on NPR. They were running a story about gas prices, and interviewed this guy who is spending over $200/week on gas. Why is he spending that much? First, he lives a 1/2 hour from his work and so does his wife. He has five kids. He says he requires TWO Ford Expeditions to get everyone around. Are you kidding me? Buy a minivan douche bag. Move close to where you live and find a school near by for your kids. Insanity!

$200 @ $4.07/gal (national average) = 50 gallons of gas. Ford expedition gets 12/18 mpg = 750 miles per week...

50 miles per day per car. That's insane. If you have five kids ("Hotdog down a hallway Jimbob"), maybe buy one expedition and one prius for getting around town. If they did, they would use 33 gallons of gas, costing $134 per week in fuel, saving $3328/year, which would take 6 years to repay the $20,000 (MSRP) Prius, assuming gas prices dont go up at all.

I'm amazed that more people haven't adjusted their driving habits. Europe has had much higher gas prices than we do for a long long time, which is why a lot more people ride mopeds, motorcycles, and tiny little cars that get good gas mileage. I think in my two years in Spain I saw one full sized truck (besides the usual garbage truck and the like). The problem isn't that gas is too expensive, it's that we are using way to much of it!
